POSTER BRIEF.

the sketch for one of the final ideas

that's the digitalised version

So I came to this point where I tried to make this idea work, but than I realized that the poster would only work if it was horizontal, so I decided to go to plan b.

BLAN B.

these were the original images that I took

and than I made it into this and was quite happy with the final outcome, recently I've been working on hand-rendered typography that was influenced by James Victore.

RE-VISITING THE BRIEF.

So I changed my 'what is good' - again.
But as Fred said it's better to fail, fail again and fail better.

So I chose my new theme to be 'PERSONALITIES'. I already started looking into possible topics. Such as personality traits and personality disorders that seam quite promising.

I started looking at some documentaries about the psychology behind the personality and it seems very interesting. I have thought to continue my research on personality types because it's very interesting what similarities people have between each other and how it works and why it is so.

ANALYZE. RESEARCH PLAN.

16 page booklet research plan:

My theme:
'Home Improvements'

THE BRIEFS HIGHLIGHTS. ( I went trough the brief again to be certain I fit into the guidelines and tick boxes, cuz apparently that's what this course is about)

The content has to be reflected in the product.

The work SHOULD EXPLORE possible PRODUCTS (just to clarify: Something produced by human or mechanical effort or by a natural process.So....can actually be something else than a book), ranges (so needs to be more than ONE) and methods of distribution that MAY (Expressing possibility, can-be able) suggested by your content OR reflect your own creative ambitions within Graphic Design (so, what if my creative ambitions are outside graphic design?)

1st part of the brief:  practical, visual and contextual investigation into your SPECIFIC SUBJECT. (Just to clarify again it should say CONTEXTUAL first cuz how can u do the practical side without the contextual?)

2nd part of the brief: practical and contextual research exploring relationship between different graphic design disciplines. I CHOSE: Product & packaging, Branding & identity. ( I chose these two for certain reasons that you will see in my research book)

3rd part of the brief: (this is my 'favorite' part) PRODUCE a practical and contextual RESPONSE (fair enough) to your research  that brings together your research into content (so you can do whatever but it has to have content, wow, tricky way of making everyone to do a book, so much for creative freedom) , context (which is clear enough, because it has to be a book, so just adopt the book to be related to your research) , specific design disciplines (which you already researched by now) and appropriate media/formats (book, or publication because it has to be content heavy as it seems). Your response should explore the relationship (what exactly does that mean? so you do your 'product' (in this case, books, or publications)) bewtween product range and methods/media of distribution (and than find ways and places to promote?)  as well as specific audiences (duh? which should be considered in the begging before even starting the project) , contexts (am, is that not the same as methods and media of distribution?) and appropriate tone of voice (so a tone of voice that suits your audience and your subject).

So...what about design development? i guess that's the least important part for a designer?

WHAT IS GOOD.

After re-reading the brief and realizing that 'home improvements' is definitely not a topic I want to spend ages researching. I went back to the drawing board and thought again, looking trough my list I realized that my first choice was the right choice. PEOPLE! But because I know that that is WAY to broad I narrowed it down to people with character because that is what makes me so interested in people. PERSONALITY. With that I already started some research and there is so much stuff I can hang on to.

There is a quite good personality tesy that you can do online. i did mine. Pretty close.

http://www.humanmetrics.com/cgi-win/jtypes2.asp (more than welcome to do it and send me your results)

There are also many types of personalities. I found a description of 16 of them here. Which already gave me few ideas of what I could do. I could also do portraits of people and try to build the image of that personality trough their environment or a social situations. Like 'How does ISTJ drinks tea?' or smth like that. And that would be in a form of a short introduction to personality types. I could do all sorts of products with this. A book of course because that's the easiest one to think of but I think I might push this a bit further.

Reading the description of different personality types gave me an idea that i could create a set of notebooks accordingly to the personality type. So the notebook would only be suitable for that type of personality.

I realized that the work is done for me and all the personalty types are narrowed down to one word and  put into 4 categories so 3 each. I looked at famous persons in each categories that I might use as visuals.

RESEARCH FOR DESIGN PRACTICE 2. CHANGE

After three sessions - I decided to change my theme again. I first had truth but apparently that was too broad, than I looked at nasa for no particular reason, just because I misinterpreted a task, than I looked at products that Nasa created not space related, apparently again I misinterpreted the task because I found stuff about ACTUAL products, the session was about packaging or publications, that's what the final is going to be anyways.

MY NEW GOOD IS home improvements.

This PDF was helpful for facts: http://www.oft.gov.uk/shared_oft/markets-work/home-repairs/Research-Report-TNS-BMRB.pdf

Than I looked at this website because it's relevant to my topic: http:www.homeimprovementmagazines.co.uk/

This website was helpful as well: http://www.diynetwork.com/home-improvement/index.html

These are my research and concept boards (Click to enlarge so you wouldn't think that I haven't done any work, I just don't see the point of copying the same (text) information into the blog again)

My final is going to be an A5 printed publication with a perfect bind, embossed cover and foiled in some of the chapters.

In order to produce a studio mock up I will ask Suzanne if she could show me hot to do so or go to Vernon street, have an induction and do it professional (which I probably won't have time to because of my time table I don't have free day to do so).

To improve my design practice I want to use the laser-cut, the screen printing room for foiling and the embossing tool.
