We met up during lunch and discussed the topics we had. The final decision is finally made. We're going with 'How to prepare a meal without wasting time and money'. So we did a bit of brainstorming of possible solutions and chose each one of them for further research and development. I have 'sharing' because it answers to both of the problems (time and money).
This might make You feel hungry, so do not watch it with an empty belly:
I liked how this video was made, the plate is separated in half but different food is on each plate, but still it comes together. And this video is more about cultural differences.
The other video is more about sharing food around the world. The industry of food and how it's different in different countries:
The conclusion is that if You share food You might even save lives and of course waste less.
Preparing food creatively also helps You not to waste time, at least you feel that you're not wasting time at all. When You have what to show after a certain amount of time, we don't think that it's wasting time anymore.
Even watching something being prepared in a creative way doesn't feel like wasting time:
Sharing food is also romantic, Food sharing and feeding another person suggest intimacy; two studies of American college students conclude that food sharing is really intimate and natural. Because when we're born mothers take care of us and feeding is one of the basic needs.
This is some interesting information that I found from: European Journal of Social Psychology Eur. J. Soc. Psychol. 28, 423±436 (1998)
* an expression of trust: an agreement to share germs, and precious food resource- tastier food can make a more impressive sharing experience
* a shared intimate sensual experience: everyone who shares is having the same intimate sensual (literally- warm or cold, different textures) experience, together, at the same time
* relaxing social experience: things like steamy ginger tea or velvety chocolate mousse are relaxing. its like having a massage in the same room with friends who are also getting a massage. i’ve never done that but i’d like to...
* this relaxing activity makes it socially acceptable to enjoy a moment of silence
* it is a Universal thing. everyone eats, and eats socially. it can connect anyone who happens to be randomly eating together.
* you can determine mood and personality by someone’s eating styles and preferences
* sharing a single batch of food requires navigation and cooperation
Food sharing is a really important thing all around the world, even animals have their ways in sharing food. So if food sharing is so important and doesn't feel as wasting time at all so maybe cooking has to be important as well. Sharing unites people and gets them together. From my own experience I know that the best way to get to know a group of people or just have a fun and what seems productive time is cooking together, because it's more fun, sociable, cheaper as well if you split the bill. For example: Me and my roommate Lauren share our shopping and like preparing meals together and we're really close, she's my best friend here in Leeds. We never notice when time flies while we're preparing our dinner. On the other hand my other roommate, that I didn't get to know at all, doesn't ever come to the kitchen, so he never prepares anything with us at all. In conclusion: Food preparing together doesn't seem as a waste of time, is good fun and brings people together.
